Overview

Founded by the Olsen family in the 1890s, Estancia San Huberto is one of Patagonia’s most iconic fly fishing lodges, offering exclusive access to 25 miles of the legendary Malleo River. Surrounded by native forest and set beneath the snowcapped Lanín Volcano, the lodge sits at the heart of a historic working ranch in northern Patagonia, Argentina.

San Huberto blends old-world character with exceptional dry fly fishing for wild brown and rainbow trout on the Malleo River. Its private stretch of the Malleo features smooth meadow pools, technical pocket water, and spring creek-like channels that demand finesse. Access is tightly controlled and thoughtfully rotated, allowing guests to fish in near solitude.

The Olsen family’s decades of experience hosting anglers shows in every detail—from home-cooked meals and beautifully appointed rooms to warm hospitality and veteran guides. San Huberto is ideal for anglers seeking classic dry fly fishing on Patagonia’s renowned Malleo River, genuine Argentine hospitality, and a deep connection to one of Patagonia’s most storied rivers.

Accommodations

The 25,000-acre Estancia San Huberto lies just outside Junín de los Andes in northern Patagonia, Argentina, and has been owned and operated by the Olsen family since its founding in the 1890s. The lodge offers six double and four single rooms, accommodating up to 16 guests (12 anglers max), each with a private ensuite bathroom.

After days on the Malleo River, guests return to a lodge with high ceilings, trophy stag mounts, and a central fireplace; the expansive upstairs lounge and self-serve bar provide a warm, inviting space where guests gather for cocktails and appetizers each evening. Downstairs, the dining room serves up family recipes featuring ranch-raised meats, garden vegetables, and organic herbs—showcasing the estancia’s deep Argentine culinary roots.

Hospitality is second nature for the Olsens. They personally attend to guests throughout their stay, sharing San Huberto Lodge’s traditions and making anglers feel like part of the family.

The Fishing

The biggest draw at Estancia San Huberto is the lodge’s exclusive access to 25 miles of the legendary Malleo River, considered by many to offer the finest dry fly fishing in Patagonia, Argentina. This spring-fed freestone flows from Tromen Lake to the Aluminé River and is known for its prolific hatches and consistent surface action throughout the season. With no outside pressure and careful beat rotation, anglers enjoy private walk-and-wade access to this iconic dry-fly water.

The Malleo’s upper section features classic pocket water with rocky runs and riffles, while the middle section softens into smooth glides, cut banks, and willow-lined edges perfect for hopper, mayfly, and attractor fishing. Browns and rainbows average 16–17 inches, with larger fish regularly encountered. Dry fly fishing is often the name of the game on the Malleo, but streamers and nymphs can be effective when conditions call for it. Since floating is not permitted on the Malleo River, guests travel by truck between the pools and beats.

In addition to the Malleo, San Huberto offers 5.5 miles of private access to the Hauca Mamuil, a lesser-known tributary that fishes best in November and December. The diversity of water, strong insect life, and consistently rising trout make San Huberto Lodge a premier destination for technical and rewarding dry fly fishing in Patagonia.

Our Take

  • San Huberto Lodge enjoys a high rate of repeat clientele so we recommend contacting us a year in advance if you think San Huberto Lodge might be a good fit for your group.
  • With hatches all season, San Huberto’s private section on the Malleo River is a dry fly anglers dream.
  • Patagonia’s angling history runs deep at San Huberto. They were the first ranch in northern Patagonia to welcome hunters and anglers in the early 1970s.
  • San Huberto is best suited for anglers who only want to fish with dry flies on an iconic river and are content knowing that fish over 22 inches are possible but uncommon.
We had another wonderful week at San Huberto with terrific weather, great fishing, and were treated like royalty by Ronnie and the staff. Guides are the best you can find anywhere on this earth! They are patient, attentive, and excellent teachers. In addition, they are just great people to spend time with. Wish you could clone them. Alex and I tag-teamed another beautiful Malleo River Brown Trout that looked exactly like the 26-inch Brown we caught two years ago, except 5 inches shorter. The resemblance between the two fish is amazing. Thanks for making this happen — again. I am so fond of this place; I’d like to spend as much time there as possible. I definitely plan to spend a week there in December (this year) fishing dry flies.
