Overview

Kau Tapen is the original Tierra de Fuego Sea Run Brown Trout Fishing lodge (est. 1984) and the flagship of Nervous Waters’ refined properties, blending serious sea-trout fishing with polished, five-star hospitality. Guests fish both the middle Río Grande and its intimate tributary, the Menéndez- a combination that delivers classic swing water, forgiving options on windy days, and variety throughout the season.

Kau Tapen boasts more than 5 sea-trout world records and decades of angling dreams realized from anglers releasing 20–30-pound Sea Run Brown Trout, fresh from the Atlantic Ocean.   The program limits rod counts and carefully rotates beats ensuring plenty of rested water each session and lots of elbow room.  At day’s end, you return to a refined lodge with single rooms, thoughtful amenities, and service that’s dialed in after four decades on the Rio Grande. This one-of-a-kind atmosphere has organically created a high number or repeat anglers year after year.

Accommodations

Kau Tapen Lodge’s refined accommodations offer a luxurious and welcoming refuge from the harsh elements of Tierra del Fuego. Upon return from the river, staff greet anglers with their favorite cocktail as they slip out of waders in the dedicated wader changing room. From ceiling to floor to furnishings, Kau Tapen’s all-wood interior gives off a warm glow that matches the fire always burning in the stone hearth. After a long day of Tierra del Fuego Sea Run Brown Trout fishing, anglers relax in the living room and bar area with a cocktail, sharing the day’s highlights or thumbing through Kau Tapen’s enviable fishing records dating back to 1984. Guests may enjoy the sauna, Jacuzzi, Finnish shower , or book a massage. The lodge even has loaner rods and a small fly shop to replenish tackle.

The à la carte menu is an integral part of the Kau Tapen experience, featuring Argentina’s famed beef, fine wines, traditional asados, fruit platters, decadent desserts, and an array of gourmet appetizers.

Kau Tapen Lodge hosts up to 12 anglers in 10 en-suite rooms with king or queen beds. From the second week of January through the first week of March, Kau Tapen limits capacity to 10 anglers, giving every guest a private, single room.

The Fishing

Kau Tapen Lodge gives you quick access to the middle Río Grande and the intimate Río Menéndez, a combination that provides classic swing water, forgiving options on windy days, and rare variety. In early and late season, the lodge holds 12 anglers, but during mid-peak season, Kau Tapen is limited to 10 anglers, each enjoying a private single room and more water to fish.

Most anglers fish two-handed 7–8-weight rods on the Río Grande, casting Skagit or Scandi heads with interchangeable tips (T-8 to T-14) that handle the range from soft evening swings to heavy daytime sink-tips. On the Río Menéndez, a fast single-hand 7–8-weight shines for precise presentations in tighter lies. Productive flies include dark leeches and intruders in low light, slimmer profiles and nymphs as the sun rises, rubber-legs and zonkers for pushy conditions, and Sunray-style baitfish when fish are tracking high. Presentations vary from a traditional swing, to a swing with a pulsing strip, to a controlled dead-drift when fish want it subtle.

Kau Tapen runs a split-day schedule—prime morning and evening sessions with a midday break back at the lodge. Bilingual Argentine and international guides are unusually talented at reading conditions and their clients. They will also quickly change pools or beats as needed for success.

Our Take

  • In addition to the Río Grande, guests have access to 22 miles of the intimate Menendez River. As the only tributary of the Río Grande where Sea Run Brown Trout can successfully spawn, the Menéndez is one of the crown jewels of Kau Tapen Lodge.
  • Built in 1984, it still holds the highest of bars when it comes to service, accommodations and reputation.
  • The anglers we book at Kau Tapen are two-handed rod enthusiasts who regularly fish high end lodges around the world for a variety of species.
  • Every year we help anglers book two lodges back-to-back on the Rio Grande. If this is your goal, be sure to contact Fly Fishing Patagonia 12 months in advance.
Thank you for recommending Kau Tapen! Not only was the fishing incredible, but the guides were some of the best I’ve experienced. We especially loved Patrick who was patient, kind and had a very good understanding of the fish and fishery. Peter landed a 21 and 23 pounder while my largest were 19 and 20. But I lost one that the guide was sure was much bigger. Just awesome!
