The Torres del Paine Fly Fishing program is based in the spectacular southern reaches of Chilean Patagonia, just outside the jagged peaks and glaciers of Torres del Paine National Park. This world-renowned destination is ideal for both anglers and active non-anglers alike. With some of the best trout fishing in southern Chile, it’s a rare opportunity to explore wild, raw Patagonia—whether with a fly rod, a camera, or hiking boots.
Anglers explore more than 60 miles of private spring creeks, small rivers, and midsized freestone streams—most of which have only recently opened to anglers. These waters hold healthy populations of resident and migratory Brown Trout, many over 20 inches. Thanks to long-term leases secured by our outfitter, traveling anglers can now enjoy truly exploratory fly fishing in Torres del Paine and the surrounding wilderness.
Non-fishing guests can enjoy full-day guided adventures, including glacier treks, horseback rides, kayaking, cave explorations, and photography safaris inside Torres del Paine National Park. Every guest can enjoy their preferred activity each day with a dedicated guide at no additional cost.
Simple Patagonia Hotel, located just outside Puerto Natales, overlooks the shimmering Señoret Channel in the Seno de Última Esperanza (Última Esperanza Sound). This boutique hotel is designed to immerse guests in the landscapes of Chilean Patagonia, offering panoramic views and open-concept spaces. Rooms feature either one king bed or two queen beds, plus private bathrooms. Simple Patagonia serves as a refined, comfortable base for anglers and non-anglers heading out for daily fishing or excursions into Torres del Paine National Park.
Guests fishing the Rubens Valley, located to the south near the Argentine border, stay in a fully renovated early-20th-century farmhouse. This remote hostería includes eight private rooms, a restaurant, and a quincho for traditional Patagonian asados. Surrounded by untouched steppe and working sheep estancias, the Rubens Valley feels frozen in time. Several wild trout rivers and spring creeks—many draining toward both the Atlantic and Pacific—are accessible exclusively through long-term private leases.
To the north of Puerto Natales and east of the park lies Estancia San Luis, a private 32,000-acre ranch with jaw-dropping views of the Paine Massif. Here, guests stay at El Último Puesto, a modest yet recently renovated cabin ideal for groups of up to four anglers. It includes three bedrooms, two shared bathrooms, and an open kitchen and dining area. From the cabin, anglers enjoy immediate walk-and-wade access to miles of private spring creeks and small streams that remain unfished by outsiders.
Dining is equally exceptional across all three properties. At Simple Patagonia Hotel, breakfasts and dinners are made to order using locally sourced lamb, beef, and seafood. Guests staying at Estancia San Luis or in the Rubens Valley are treated to meals prepared by a private chef—and occasionally a traditional Chilean barbecue shared with the property owners.
Fly fishing near Torres del Paine National Park is a walk-and-wade angler’s dream. With access to over 60 miles of private spring creeks, freestone rivers, and lake outlets—many of which were unfished until recently—guests enjoy pristine water, solitude, and wild trout that rarely see a fly. Fishing access is tightly controlled through our outfitter’s long-term leases with local ranches, and every outing is guided by bilingual, veteran Patagonia fly fishing guides.
Anglers may fish four-foot-wide spring creeks, steep mountain streams or mid-sized rivers with classic riffle-run-pool structure. Migratory browns around found in rivers connecting lakes or flow directly to the ocean. Select lakes also offer chances at double-digit fish. Across the region, brown trout populations are healthy and wild, with fish averaging 17–20 inches and trophies over 24 inches caught regularly.
The fishing season runs from mid-October to mid-April. Dry fly action peaks from December through February, while streamers and nymphs are more effective during the cooler shoulder months of spring and fall. Migratory lake-run Brown Trout show up during the second half of the season and can reach 26 inches or more. These lightly pressured fish are often receptive to well-presented flies.
Standard tackle includes 5- and 6-weight fast action rods, with floating lines covering most scenarios. Sink tips can be useful in deeper pools or during inclement weather.
While anglers fish, non-angling guests enjoy fully guided excursions into Torres del Paine National Park, including glacier treks, cave tours, kayaking, horseback rides, and more—making this one of the most well-rounded outdoor travel experiences in Chile.
Most of our travelers spend 4–6 nights in the area—combining fly fishing and hiking Torres del Paine. However, within a 3.5-hour drive, you can easily add a few days fishing in Argentina.
