Overview

La Posada de los Farios is a small, family-run lodge on the banks of the Río Cisnes, 3 hours north of Coyhaique in Chilean Patagonia. Established in 1994 and nicknamed “The Inn of the Brown Trout,” it offers an authentic slice of rural Patagonia — big skies, grazing animals, wood smoke, and a quiet lodge just steps from the river.

From this home base, guests explore one of Chile’s most productive trout fisheries — guided days on the Río Cisnes, spring-fed tributaries, hidden lagunas, and nearby rivers like the Río Manihuales. The focus is wild brown trout, with rainbows in the mix and optional excursions to the coastal fjords for sea-run opportunities, all set against Andean peaks and temperate rainforest. You’ll rarely see another angler — and never the same view twice.

For anglers seeking a laid-back and intimate Patagonia trout fishing experience — quiet water, flexible daily itineraries, and a warm English-speaking host — La Posada de los Farios is one of the standout fly fishing lodges in Chilean Patagonia.

Accommodations

La Posada de los Farios is a renovated ranch house set on a working cattle farm overlooking the middle Río Cisnes in Chilean Patagonia — giving guests a quiet, lived-in feel rather than a purpose-built resort. Your hosts, Rex Bryngelson and his wife Maike, have been welcoming anglers to this remote corner of Chile since 1994 and have built a reputation for warm, genuine hospitality that keeps guests coming back year after year. The lodge accommodates just six guests in three comfortable twin-bedded rooms, each with a private ensuite bath and plenty of space to spread out gear.

The heart of the lodge is an all wooden living room wrapped in windows, where anglers gather around the wood stove for cocktails and appetizers before sitting down to family-style meals in the adjoining dining room. The dining schedule is built around the day’s fishing — not the staff’s convenience. Power is supplied by a generator, heat comes from wood stoves, and a wood-fired hot tub waits outside for a soak under southern stars.

Stays here feel intentionally simple and unplugged — guests settle into a slower pace, good Chilean wine, and fresh home-cooked meals built around local lamb, beef, chicken, and vegetables from the garden. The week ends with a traditional asado — lamb roasted over an open fire by local gauchos — a fitting farewell to one of the most remote fly fishing lodge experiences in Chilean Patagonia.

The Fishing

The trout fishing at La Posada de los Farios is built around the exceptional Río Cisnes and it’s multiple sections. Most fishing is done from drift boats and rafts, floating a particular section depending on conditions, season, and guest preference.

The upper river floats push through semi-arid mountain terrain with outstanding dry fly water and shots at trout averaging 15 to 18 inches. The two lodge floats drift through old-growth Coihue forest where the largest predatory browns of 20 inches and better are fairly common. The lower canyon float descends into lush coastal rainforest, bigger water, and some of the most spectacular scenery in Chile.

Beyond the Cisnes, the Río Manihuales offers a change of scenery — a smaller river with log-strewn banks, deep pools, and solid trout fishing in more wild and rugged country. For small water enthusiasts, wade fishing options include various tributaries of the Cisnes and Manihuales. Lago Las Torres is known for 18 to 22-inch brown trout that key in on dragonflies on warm afternoons. Rex’s private lakes, reached by horseback, offer sight fishing to browns that see only a handful of anglers each season.

Time it right and you’ll experience the Jurassic-like Cantaria beetle hatch, when trout key on these oversized insects and black foam beetles with dark bellies are the go-to fly for explosive topwater eats. From sight fishing with dries to swinging streamers for bigger browns, La Posada de los Farios is a fly fishing paradise for wild trout.

Our Take

  • La Posada de los Farios is a consistent favorite among clients seeking a small lodge with world-class dry fly fishing —all at an more economical price point.
  • Cantaria or Stag Beetles are prolific in this part of Chile and can provide explosive dry-fly fishing, but timing your trip is key if you hope to hit the hatch.
  • Our clients consistently praise the intimate feel of this six-rod operation. Its hosts, Rex and Maike Bryngelson, are a seasoned American-Chilean husband-and-wife team who have run La Posada since 1994. Rex’s decades of pioneering experience on Chilean rivers, combined with Maike’s warm Chilean hospitality, create an atmosphere that feels more like visiting old friends than checking into a lodge.
  • We often recommend La Posada as a 4 to 5 day add-on to another Chile program, but the fishing quality and favorable rate make a full week a better value.
We caught some beautiful browns in the upper stretches of the Cisnes and it’s now my favorite river in Chile! The guides clearly knew this water and were a joy to be with. Rex & Maike were so kind and went out of their way to accommodate us.
