Overview

Estancia Laguna Verde delivers an unparalleled fly fishing experience on the southern shores of Argentina’s Lago Strobel, better known as Jurassic Lake. This remote Patagonia destination is famed for its colossal rainbow trout that average around 9 pounds, with many fish surpassing the 20-pound mark. Guests enjoy exclusive access to more than 14 kilometers of shoreline, over 10 kilometers of the Barrancoso River—including its upper, middle, and lower sections—as well as Moro Creek and a dozen interconnected lakes and lagoons.

The fishing here is unapologetically intense. Whether you’re sight-casting at the river mouth, swinging flies through current seams, or stripping streamers across the lake’s turquoise flats, anglers regularly connect with trout of a size and strength rarely encountered anywhere else.

After exhilarating days on the water, guests return to a comfortable lodge overlooking Laguna Verde. Traditional Argentine cuisine, fine local wines, and warm, attentive staff create a convivial atmosphere that enhances the international angler’s experience.

Accommodations

Estancia Laguna Verde accommodates up to 12 anglers in 12 well-appointed rooms (10 singles and two doubles), all with private bathrooms. The lodge sits on a low bluff above its namesake lake, with large windows framing the vast Patagonian steppe and creating a comfortable, welcoming base for each day on the water. After long days on the water, guests gather in the living room to relax, swap stories, and enjoy a drink before dinner.
Designed with anglers in mind, the lodge features dedicated gear rooms for drying and organizing equipment. Hearty breakfasts are served each morning from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m., and lunches are taken either streamside or back at the lodge, depending on the day’s program. Evenings begin with appetizers and drinks, followed by traditional Argentine dinners—often served late, in true Patagonian style.
A weekly lamb asado is a guest favorite, paired with a thoughtful selection of Argentine wines and a full bar. The lodge offers 24-hour electricity, Wi-Fi, and laundry service, keeping guests comfortable and connected throughout their stay.

The Fishing

Fishing at Estancia Laguna Verde delivers both impressive size and numbers of trophy rainbow trout. Anglers have exclusive access to more than 30 kilometers of Lago Strobel (Jurassic Lake) shoreline, over 10 kilometers of the Barrancoso River, roughly 12 kilometers of Moro Creek, and a dozen interconnected lakes and lagoons—a vast private fishery loaded with powerful rainbows.
On Lago Strobel, rainbows average 7–9 pounds and fish over 20 pounds are hooked regularly. Cold, clear water and dense scud populations drive exceptional growth, so every fish feels oversized for its length.
The Barrancoso River, Strobel’s only major tributary, lets anglers sight-cast to big rainbows in clear pools, pockets, and runs. Prime river windows are October through December and again in late March through May, when fall rains lift flows and lake fish push into the system.
Moro Creek winds across the estancia, connecting more than a dozen small and medium-sized lakes. This chain offers varied stillwater fishing for resident brown, brook, and rainbow trout, especially early in the season or when wind makes the big lake tough.
Most fishing is done while wading and casting from the banks to cruising or visibly feeding fish, with guides using Toyota Hilux trucks to rotate between beats.

Our Take

  • We’d classify Estancia Laguna Verde as adventurous and being physically fit may offer more opportunities.
  •  Anglers go for the once in a lifetime opportunity to catch 7-15 pound trout. But the views from the lodge, exotic environment, gourmet meals and the professional staff are what keep people coming back.
  • Estancia Laguna Verde’s private access to the Barrancoso River is a real asset, but anglers need to understand travel involved and what the fishing is like on some of those beats.

On man, you were so right! The fishing was off the charts and I don’t think it was because I was there on a good week. Normally a guide freaks out at a 10 pound trout, but here that’s a normal fish. I also can’t say enough about the staff and chef. Dinners were a bit late but so worth it. Thank you Fly Fishing Patagonia!
