Overview

Estancia Collón Cura Lodge in northern Patagonia, Argentina, offers 22 private miles along the world-famous Collón Cura River. This river is renowned as a productive rainbow and brown trout fishery that is especially friendly to novice fly anglers while still providing a challenge for veteran anglers seeking the river’s largest trout. Estancia Collón Cura Lodge guests fish from drift boats and rafts or use them for transportation between the easily waded riffles and runs. Renovated in early 2025, the lodge sits on the east bank of the Collón Cura River and is easily accessible from the San Martín de los Andes and Bariloche airports.

Estancia Collón Cura Lodge welcomes up to 10 anglers at a time in luxurious accommodations set on an 86,000-acre private ranch. With its great location and unmatched private access on the lower Collón Cura River, this lodge is ideal for novice to expert anglers and pairs well with other northern Patagonia lodges for anglers planning ahead.

Accommodations

Guests at Estancia Collón Cura Lodge stay in two standalone buildings — the Main Lodge and the Guest House — both renovated in 2025 and beautifully appointed. The Main Lodge consists of 3 large double bedrooms on a single floor, each with a private bathroom and access to a comfortable common living room. The Guest House has 2 double bedrooms with an ensuite bathroom and its own sitting area. Throughout both buildings, furnishings and finishes reflect a level of care and attention rarely found outside five-star properties — this is Patagonia hospitality at its finest.

A third building holds a convivial gathering room for cocktails, appetizers, asados, and fishing tales. Breakfasts are continental-style, lunches are served streamside during fishing days, and dinners are late, multi-course feasts built around local meats, fresh salads, vegetables, and excellent Argentine wines.

Non-anglers are equally well catered for, with horseback rides and hikes across the ranch, birding, and day trips to the charming mountain town of San Martín de los Andes just a short drive away. Tucked within the surrounding ranch, Estancia Collón Cura Lodge is extremely private — guests are looked after as if they were family.

The Fishing

The Collón Cura River is a large freestone river set in an expansive valley that, at times, feels reminiscent of rural parts of the northern Rockies. Unlike most rivers in Patagonia, the Collón Cura consistently provides excellent fishing from December through May. Brown and rainbow trout averaging 16–18 inches are most common, and guests can expect to catch double-digit numbers of fish each day. The Collón Curá has hatches of mayflies, caddis, and the famous green worms that fall from overhanging willow branches. Streamer fishing is productive in February and March during the annual minnow run, when millions of juvenile pejerrey patagónico and puyen chico migrate into the Collón Curá from the lake. The trout gorge on these minnows, often breaking the water in an aggressive feeding frenzy. In the fall months of March through May, trout key in on grasshoppers, and trophy migratory brown and rainbow trout return to the Collón Cura from the Alicurá Reservoir.

Over the course of a single day, guests will fish long riffles, shallow gravel bars, steep drop-offs, cutbanks, and even challenging willow-lined side channels. Anglers float comfortably in drift boats, fishing as they go and often stopping to prospect promising-looking water on foot. Depending on the day and interests of the anglers, Estancia Collón Cura Lodge guides cover various lengths of river, utilizing the lodge’s many private access points.

Our Take

  • While January and February have the inchworm hatch and minnow migration, we personally favor the fall fishing for the lower-water hopper action and larger rainbow and brown trout.
  • Since 2001, we outfitted 3-night float trips on the Collón Cura River and took out at the ranch’s property where the river meets the Alicurá Reservoir. Back then it had phenomenal fishing. Today, it is even better.  Contact Fly Fishing Patagonia to learn why.
  • The Collón Cura River is similar to the Yellowstone River yet has far fewer boats, and it’s a solid choice for novice anglers.
  • One could fish Estancia Collón Cura Lodge for a full week, but pairing it with another lodge in the area delivers a more dynamic experience. Contact Fly Fishing Patagonia to start planning
My husband and I loved our stay at Collon Cura Lodge! The beds were luxurious and the chef I think from Salta made the best empanadas we’ve ever had in Argentina. The guides really made each day enjoyable. One day we had a grilled steak for lunch! Both of our guides put us on so many fish we quickly lost count. Thank you! We weren’t considering this lodge but you were right! Spot on for us!
