We know a handful of anglers who catch plenty of trout in Patagonia every year—despite never mastering the double haul. But if they had this cast only half right they’d catch more fish and probably bigger fish.
The double haul loads extra energy into the rod, increasing line speed and helping you deliver the fly farther and more accurately—all with less effort. It’s a useful skill anywhere, but in Patagonia’s infamous winds, it becomes almost essential. If your haul feels clumsy now, a little focused practice can dramatically improve your accuracy and control.
Ideally, work with an instructor. But if that’s not possible, all you need is YouTube and a spacious patch of grass. We suggest starting with Peter’s video below and bookmark it. Somewhere handy, keep a rod strung up with a piece of yarn for the fly. With just a few 10-minute sessions while referencing the video, you’ll be casting farther with fewer false casts and a lot less strain.
